FSA and HSA

An easy way to save money on your self-care.

With either a flexible savings account (FSA) or health savings account (HSA), you can save money tax-free from each paycheck and use the funds toward your self-care medical expense.  It's important to make the most of the funds you have already allocated, especially in the case of FSAs, which give the funds back to your employer if the they aren't used by the end of the calendar year.

FOR ACUPUNCTURE:

Acupuncture is classified as a qualified medical expense. No physician's prescription needed.

You can use your FSA or HSA without a tax penalty.

FOR MASSAGE THERAPY

Even though at Alquimia Wellness we perform evidence-based clinical massage therapy, to avoid a tax penalty, it will qualify ONLY with a doctor's  written prescription.

The IRS ruling states that medical care expenses must be primarily to alleviate or prevent a physical or mental ailment.  Some illnesses that qualify are:  Stress, Back pain, Pain management, Anxiety, Depression, Carpel Tunnel Syndrome, Arthritis, Diabetes, Hypertension, Fibromyalgia, and Chronic Fatigue.

If you feel you suffer from one of these conditions, speak with your health care provider.  Let him/her know that you have an FSA or HSA and would like to use funds toward massage therapy for treatment or prevention of your condition.

The following must be on the prescription:

1.  Medical necessity: reason you need massage therapy

2. Frequency:  number of sessions per month

3. Duration:  length of treatment (e.g.:  12 months)
