Fascia: The Connective Tissue Behind Movement and Mobility
Your body is more interconnected than you might think, and fascia is an important part of that connection.
When we think about the human body, we tend to think about muscles, bones and joints. But throughout the body there is also a continuous network of connective tissue known as fascia. It surrounds and supports muscles, bones, nerves, organs and other structures, helping them work together as we move.
What Is Fascia?
Fascia is a fibrous connective tissue made largely of collagen. It forms an extensive network throughout the body, providing support and helping different tissues move in relation to one another.
There are three main types of fascia:
Superficial fasciaLocated beneath the skin, superficial fascia connects the skin with the tissues underneath and also contains fat, nerves and blood vessels.
Deep fasciaDeep fascia surrounds and separates muscles and other structures. It provides support while allowing muscles and tissues to move and glide in relation to one another.
Visceral fasciaThis fascia surrounds and supports the internal organs, helping to maintain their position while still allowing movement.

Why Does Fascia Matter?
Muscles don't function in isolation. They work together with fascia, joints and other structures to produce movement.
Fascia helps provide structural support and contributes to the way forces are transmitted through the body. Because of this close relationship between muscle and connective tissue, stiffness or restricted movement isn't always about one individual muscle.
This is one reason therapeutic bodywork may look beyond the exact area where tension is felt and consider how the surrounding tissues are moving as well.
Fascia and Movement
Movement involves coordination between many different structures. Fascia forms connections between muscles and regions of the body, helping tissues move smoothly in relation to one another.
Repetitive activity, prolonged periods in the same position, physical training and previous injury can all influence how the body feels and moves.
For someone experiencing persistent muscular tension or stiffness, working with both the muscles and surrounding connective tissue can therefore provide a broader approach than focusing on one tight muscle alone.
What Is Myofascial Release?
The word myofascial refers to muscle (myo) and the fascia surrounding and connecting it.
Myofascial release is a hands-on approach that uses sustained pressure, movement and stretching techniques to work with areas of muscular and connective tissue tension.
It can be incorporated into a therapeutic massage session alongside other techniques, depending on what the body needs.
Rather than treating myofascial release as a completely separate type of massage, I use it as one of the tools available within a more individualized treatment.
Supporting Healthy Movement
You don't need a complicated routine to look after your body between treatments. Regular movement and avoiding long periods in one position can help maintain mobility and reduce stiffness.
Stretching and mobility exercises can also be useful, particularly for people who spend long periods sitting or standing or who train regularly.
Foam rollers and massage balls may provide another way to work with areas that feel tight, although more pressure isn't necessarily better. The goal should be comfortable movement rather than forcing the tissues.
Most importantly, pay attention to changes in how your body feels and moves. Persistent or unexplained pain should always be properly assessed rather than assumed to be muscular or fascial in origin.
